Better a male or a female voice for your switchboard?

Choosing a male or female voice for your switchboard is often one of the biggest dilemmas for all our customers. We know that males and females have always had physical differences, but there are also psychological differences that our society has shaped within us; in fact, listening to a male speaker elicits different emotions from listening to a female speaker. A study carried out by the University of Quebec revealed how listening to a voice of one gender rather than the other completely changes the perception of the company. So, which voice is best to choose for your switchboard or voicemail?

The study reveals that although gender itself is not a problem, many factors such as intonation, timbre and cadence are very important.
Here are some factors to always bear in mind:- Intensity: for both men and women, a voice with good intensity has an overall better impact on the quality of the corporate image;

– Speed: it may seem strange but, according to the study, a message read with a sustained rhythm will appear more true and will be perceived better than one recorded with a slow rhythm.

A second study conducted by AdWeek Media revealed that, for many, male and female voices did not create a difference in purpose. However, almost half of the respondents found some differences. 48%, for example, found males the most authoritative, 49% disagreed while 46% found that females were gentler and more engaging. These results leave some doubts.

So, what to do? How can I figure out the correct gender to use for telephone messages? Often, we must see the purpose and be aware of one thing: it is not important who reads the message but what is said and, often, how it is said. The message must be read with the right rhythm and the right intonation.
